The RGP July Wrap Up

Another month passed by, another month cleaning more trash. Some things never change.

As usual, there were excellent events to regale you about so let’s get into it.

Started month off with a bang.

Cleanup near Sunshine Used Car Sales.

What about it?

The proprietor of this fine establishment saw me cleaning up across the street, and came out to say what’s up.

Not only that, but he offered the use of their dumpster (not pictured) for anytime I might be cleaning in the area.

That’s huge — this spot, on Mercer Ave, is a place where trash accumulates quick.

Not having to bring the garbage back to home base is a game changer, and being able to clean jumbo bags is another side effect of this.

Shoutout to the homie for starting the month off strong.

In July we also saw some crazy wildlife:

Baby lizard, maybe 1 inch long
Bird
Gopher Tortoise (!!!)

Really made the rounds as far as wildlife seen this month.

By now, I’ve come to expect lizards and iguanas. Having said that, it appears as if a new crop of baby lizards was born early in the month, as there were tiny ones everywhere.

Also saw our fill of quality birds, and of course, the gopher tortoise.

That bad boy was large and we saw him chill by the path, trample underbrush and snack on some wild nuts & berries.

Easily the coolest wild animal I’ve ever seen up close.

Fun fact, but unrelated — they can live up to about 80 years old.

Rounding out the month was the electric group cleanup (trash & part of the group pictured above)

and our journey back up north to clean trash far & wide.

Someone has to do it.

Now let’s get into the highs and lows of the month.

Highs

  • Unlocking new dumpster
  • Gopher Tortoise
  • Cleanup with Grandview Market
  • Trip Home
  • Random guy gave me a litter picker & Publix gift card

Overall a great month. Significant amounts of trash cleaned even though we missed a few days. Huge to add a new dumpster to the usable repertoire, and the wildlife we encountered was top notch as well.

A huge shoutout to everyone who showed up at Grandview Market for the group cleanup, which was a monumental success. And thank you to Mike, a random guy who gave me a litter picker and a gift card because he saw the clean in action.

Finally, nice to take a relaxing trip home and see the fam/clean new areas.

Post Cleanup Celebration at Grandview

As far as the lows this month, nothing particularly bad happened, which is great.

But there are always areas of improvement.

Lows

  • Missed a couple days
  • Accidental cleanup in the pouring rain
  • Floor collapsed at Abercrombie Mansion, no roof access
  • Disgusting beach in NY — trash everywhere

And that’s it. Never good to miss days, got caught in the pouring rain on a clean (which in reality was hilarious), was unable to access the roof at Abercrombie’s mansion which was a shame, but worst of it was the disgusting amount of trash at The Rock in NY. Consider this a reminder to take better care of the world around you.

One area of the disgusting beach

All in all, 102 shopping bags worth of trash cleaned this month, aided by some major work towards month’s end.

Goal in August is to not miss a day and get in 2 more big group cleans, which is where we can really move the needle.
