We’ve been on a nature lists kick here lately, frankly, because it works. In this article I’ll enlighten you about 4 of the best states in the US you didn’t realize had unbelievable nature. Everyone knows about Hawaii, Utah, Arizona and those other western states, but back east we got a little juice as well. Let’s get into it.

#1) Maine

Yes you’ve heard of it, but have you been there?? Maine is one of the most beautiful states in the US and sometimes people just forget it exists. Outstanding beaches, vast wilderness, mountains (including Mount Katahdin, which is one end of the Appalachian trail), lobster, LL Bean, what more could you ask for?

The main drawback is it gets cold in the winter, but in the summer you will not find a more beautiful coastline. The abundance of outdoor activities is unmatched. And get this — Maine is actually the closest state in the US to Africa geographically. The more you know.

#2) New York

New York is another one of those states that just has incredible nature. Everyone thinks of NYC, as they should, but you also have Niagara Falls, the finger lakes, Mohonk Mountain house, many waterfalls, Lake Placid. Obviously among other areas. The Lemon Squeeze hike at Mohonk is just plain fun — squeezing through rock crevices and climbing up boulders to get to an incredible payoff view. People think you need to go west to get this stuff. Get real ! It’s all over the place.

#3) New Mexico

There is one representative from the Western Conference on this list, and for that opening we have New Mexico. Though it’s often overshadowed by AZ, Utah and Colorado as far as primetime west coast nature states, New Mexico still gets the job done. Excellent desert, and also volcanoes and hot springs. Jemez Springs in particular is one of the most slept on locations in the entire US. When you go out to a place like that, you realize how amazing and awe-inspiring Earth really can be.

People will watch one episode of Breaking Bad and think they know NM. Check this out.

#4) New Hampshire

Rounding out the list we have our 4th state, and our 3rd “New” state. New Hampshire. For those on the east coast who just want to get into the mountains, look no further than NH. Cold in the winter, deeply green and energetic in the summer. Raging rivers, incredible vistas, lush forests. The kind of place you can get out to and just unplug. Everyone needs to be able to disconnect every so often and this is the place to do it. Love how dynamic the seasons are — the place is a different planet winter compared to summer. And both are incredible.

It’s actually maybe the best place on Earth. I would potentially pick going to New Hampshire over going to heaven. I’m addicted to it.
