Mammoth Cave: The Coolest Place You’ve Never Heard Of

This came across my desk this morning, and I had no choice but to share it with you.

Mammoth Cave is officially the coolest place you’ve probably never been.

Let me explain.

What is Mammoth Cave?

Mammoth Cave is a National Park, in of all places, Kentucky. Go figure.

For most of my life, I thought of Kentucky as more or less an extension of Tennessee, but it turns out it’s also home to the largest known cave system….on Earth?

Mammoth Cave, or more particularly the Mammoth-Flint Ridge cave system, has more than 420 miles of surveyed passageways.

Almost double that of the second largest known system in Mexico.

And new discoveries add distance to that number yearly.

Shows you just how much we know about the world around us.

History of the Cave

Humans have been in and around the cave for about 5000 years at this point.

Native American remains have been found in several areas of the cave, and other markings and artifacts point to their presence there over the years.

It was first discovered by Europeans in the late 1700s, apparently when a man named Johnny Houchin was out hunting a bear and the bear chased him into the cave.

But truthfully, it’s time to cut to the chase.

I’m writing this on a Sunday.

I don’t really feel like it.

And the reason I had to share it with you is because it looks sick.

Here are some cool pictures.

Also — just some cave theory — stalactites are the ones on the ceiling, and stalagmites are the ones on the ground. Now you know.

Do your own research into this place. A true natural wonder of the world.
